Standard Dumbwaiter Dimensions
Residential Dumbwaiter Sizes
For residential settings, dumbwaiters are generally smaller to fit seamlessly into homes. Typically, you would look at considering our SKG ISO-A dumbwaiter. The most common size 750mm x 750mm, making them compact enough for most houses. Common weight capacities are 50kg or 100kg. These specifications allow for safe and efficient movement of household items like groceries or laundry, without occupying too much space.
Commercial Dumbwaiter Sizes
Commercial dumbwaiters need to accommodate a wider range of size possibilities. Very small to fit tight space envelopes or larger ones to carry linen or beer kegs. Dimensions range from 500mm x 500mm up to 1000mm x 1000mm. Weight capacities are usually higher; we’ve installed a custom Dumbwaiter before that could carry 500kg; this one was specifically designed to move heavy bags of coins in a bank!
In a restaurant setting, for instance, the space must account for multiple plates or trays and may require specific custom dimensions. It’s important for business owners to balance the need for larger capacity with the available space, ensuring the dumbwaiter does not encroach significantly on kitchen or service areas.

Installation Requirements
Installing a dumbwaiter involves careful consideration of both space and power needs. We need to ensure that all the necessary mechanical and electrical components are in place for smooth operation.
Space Planning
Proper space planning is crucial for dumbwaiter installation. On the one hand, the required shaft dimensions can be set by the size of the dumbwaiter as often the case in new builds. On the other hand, we often get requests to replace old dumbwaiters in existing shafts. We can use the existing shaft as a guide for selecting the best dumbwaiter size solution.


It’s vital to plan for the overhead space; typically a combination of 1260mm to 1360mm plus serving height and door height above the car on the top floor. This space is necessary to the motor components when the motor room is in the above position.
Furthermore, understanding where the dumbwaiter will be placed in a building is important. We need to consider proximity to frequently used areas like kitchens or other service zones to increase efficiency. Proper planning can prevent costly adjustments later on.
Dumbwaiter Doors
Design elements such as doors need to be carefully considered. You’ll need enough room to open the Dumbwaiter doors easily and allow you to load the goods into it with ease. There are options for both manual and automatic doors depending on cost and your requirements. Most often our customer choose bi-parting doors because they don’t’ encroach into the loading area. However, they need to move into a void in the lift shaft and hence this height needs to be taken into account.
- Dumbwaiters come with various door types to suit different needs, preferences and space. Here are some common options:
- Bi-Parting Doors: Split in the middle and slide open vertically, with one half moving up and the other half moving down.
- Roller Shutter Doors: These doors roll up into a compact space above the opening, again providing a good option with limited space. They can be noisy though.
- Swing Doors: These doors open outward like a traditional door. You’ll need to make sure you have the space to the doors to open as wide as they can do allow for easy loading.
Entry Types
- Single Entry: As the name implies, simple entry via one side only.
- Through Doors: These doors allow access from both sides of the dumbwaiter, enabling loading and unloading from different rooms or areas on opposite sides.
- Adjacent Doors: These doors are positioned at a 90-degree angle to each other, allowing access from adjacent sides. These are useful in corner installations or where space is limited. Bear in mind that the structure needed to support this type of door means the lift cars are typically smaller for a given shaft dimension.

Double Decker Dumbwaiter
Did you know that the ISO-Z is known as the ‘double decker’ dumbwaiter? This is because it has two separate compartments. If you’re planning on installing this one, you’ll need to make sure there is enough room for both compartment doors. The lower door is swing door.
Travel Distance and Stops
It’s also important to determine how many floors the dumbwaiter needs to serve. These powerful little lifts can be built to travel large distances and cover many floors.
